History of Udimore

Am now open to hearing from just about anyone who can add any information regarding the history of the village. This might include any era up to today’s date! Anecdotes also welcome.

In Udimore He Remained is the book I wrote about my great great grandfather John Noakes who lived in the village all his life from 1800-1854. One brother was put on trial at the Old Bailey for smuggling offences, two went to Australia to start new lives and John stayed behind marrying twice. I have a few copies available from [reveal email] . Well worth a read!

My gg grandfather a James Noakes with his wife Sarah (nee Coleman) left Udimore for Australia in 1836. Could he be any relation of your John Noakes? Best Wishes,

    Robert Noakes

Hi, during the 1950’s, as a young child, an aunt and uncle of mine owned The Mill House, where we frequently stayed. In September of this year, I drove past and noticed it has been (seemingly) thoroughly modernised.

As a small child, I was sent down the extensive tunnels under the house and, as a result, I would love to know if, either the current, or past, owners are aware of their existance, let alone history?

    In fascination,

    Stephen Nattee
