Packed full of outstanding music including Butterworth’s most loved works ‘The Banks of Green Willow’ and ‘Rhapsody: A Shropshire Lad’, as well as superb live renditions of Butterworth’s A E Housman song settings by Roderick Williams. Many folk songs are included care of Peta Webb’s wonderful renditions, sung direct from Butterworth’s own field manuscripts (many of which were notated from singers in Sussex before 1914). As well as telling the story of Butterworth’s role in the Edwardian English folk revival the film traces his steps all the way to the front line trenches of World War One where he met his untimely death, considers his legacy and influence on British music both in the concert hall and in raising awareness of the music of the rural working class.
