About Brighton, East Sussex

Brighton, located on England’s south coast in East Sussex, is a vibrant seaside resort with a rich history dating back to the Bronze Age. Originally known as Brighthelmstone, it evolved from a fishing and agricultural village into a fashionable Georgian health resort, favoured by the Prince Regent who commissioned the iconic Royal Pavilion. The arrival of the railway in 1841 transformed Brighton into a popular day-trip destination from London, leading to the construction of landmarks like the Palace Pier and the Grand Hotel.

The city boasts a diverse cultural scene, renowned for its lively arts festivals including the Brighton Festival and Brighton Fringe, as well as a strong LGBT community, often dubbed the UK’s “gay capital.” Brighton’s nightlife thrives with numerous independent cafés, bars, and music venues, hosting events such as the Great Escape music festival and Brighton Pride, which attracts hundreds of thousands annually.

Brighton’s seafront stretches over five miles of shingle beach, featuring the historic Palace Pier, the derelict West Pier, and the striking Brighton i360 observation tower. The city’s unique geography places it between the South Downs and the English Channel, with chalk cliffs rising to the east and a temperate climate marked by cool summers and mild winters.

Shopping in Brighton is characterised by independent boutiques in the North Laine and the Lanes, alongside larger centres like Churchill Square. The city is also a hub for digital and creative industries, earning the nickname “Silicon Beach.” Education is well represented with the University of Brighton and the University of Sussex, both offering diverse courses and research opportunities.

Sporting life includes the Premier League football club Brighton & Hove Albion, rugby, cricket at the County Ground in Hove, and the historic Brighton Speed Trials motor race. Transport links are strong, with frequent trains to London and Gatwick Airport nearby, complemented by an extensive bus network.
