Burwash is a rural village and civil parish in East Sussex, nestled within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Located about 15 miles inland from Hastings, it sits on the River Dudwell and is steeped in history, with nearby landmarks including Battle Abbey and Bodiam Castle.
The village is famously linked to Rudyard Kipling, who lived at Bateman’s, a Jacobean mansion now managed by the National Trust. Kipling drew inspiration from the local landscape for many of his stories, and a bronze statue of him stands on Burwash High Street. The village war memorial honours his son John Kipling, who died in the First World War.
Burwash’s High Street is a designated Conservation Area, preserving its historic character with several listed buildings. St Bartholomew’s Church, a Grade II* listed building, is notable for its connection to local smuggling history, with smugglers’ graves in the churchyard.
The village’s past includes a role in the Wealden iron industry and a history of smuggling in the 18th and 19th centuries. The A265 road through Burwash was once notorious for highwaymen and was improved in the 18th century under a turnpike trust.
Within the parish lies Dallington Forest, a Site of Special Scientific Interest featuring rare ancient woodland habitats. Burwash continues to attract visitors interested in its literary heritage, historic architecture, and natural beauty.
