Buxted is a village and civil parish nestled in the Wealden district of East Sussex, England, situated on the Weald north of Uckfield. Historically, Buxted was significant for its role in the Wealden iron industry, with the first standard blast furnace, Queenstock, built around 1491. The area also played a part in early English cannon-making, with the first cast-iron cannon produced locally in 1543 by Ralf Hogge under the patronage of Parson William Levett, a wealthy figure linked to the iron trade.
The village’s name originates from the Saxon term “Bochs stede,” meaning place of the beeches. Buxted Park, once the manor house, was purchased and expanded in the early 19th century by Prime Minister Robert Jenkinson, 2nd Earl of Liverpool, who relocated the original village to its current site. The park itself is now a country house hotel surrounded by scenic walks and designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its conservation of invertebrates.
Buxted’s parish church, St Margaret the Queen, dates back to 1250 and is dedicated to Saint Margaret of Scotland. Other notable churches include St Mary the Virgin, Buxted Methodist Church, and the Roman Catholic St John the Evangelist in Heron’s Ghyll, a Grade II listed building.
Local legend tells of Nan Tuck, a 17th-century woman said to haunt Nan Tuck’s Lane after allegedly poisoning a man. The tale includes a mysterious infertile patch of land near the lane, adding an eerie element to the village’s history.
