Catsfield is a historic village and civil parish in East Sussex, situated within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Located six miles north of Bexhill and three miles southwest of Battle, it is one of the oldest settlements in the region, with archaeological remains dating back to the Romano-British period. The village was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, noting a small church serving the local hall.
The parish church of St Laurence features architecture from the early medieval period, including a nave from around 1100 and a late 12th-century tower. Its medieval bells, inscribed in Latin, were likely cast locally in the 14th or 15th century. The church clock dates from the late 19th century. Once home to Sussex’s most venerable oak, the churchyard reflects the village’s deep historical roots.
Catsfield’s landscape includes parts of Ashburnham Park, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and ancient woodland such as Twisly Wood, where Roman cremation burial sites have been discovered. The village also has a history of ironworking, with documented forge sites dating back to the 13th century.
Governance is managed locally by a parish council, with further services provided by Rother District and East Sussex County councils. Catsfield falls within the Bexhill and Battle parliamentary constituency.
Notable past residents include William Markwick, a pioneering naturalist whose observations on seasonal changes were published in the 18th century. The village’s name may derive from a North Saxon tribe or a connection to Saint Chad or Cedd, reflecting its ancient and layered heritage.
