Chailey, a village in East Sussex, is notable for its rich heritage and natural landscapes. The parish church of St. Peter, dating back to 1256, stands at Chailey Green, surrounded by a large graveyard with ancient yew trees. The village once had more churches than pubs, reflecting its historical religious significance.
The Heritage Mill, also known as Beard’s Mill, sits on Red House Common and has been a landmark since at least 1590. Visitors can explore the mill museum, which preserves this traditional Sussex windmill. Nearby, Chailey Brickworks, one of Europe’s oldest factories, has been producing bricks for over 300 years. The adjacent pit, now a blue lake, is a site of geological interest with fossils and diverse wildlife.
Chailey Common, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, is a rare heathland in the Sussex Weald. It is managed for conservation with grazing by white park cattle, ponies, and heath sheep, supporting a variety of rare plants and insects, including marsh gentian and bog asphodel. Markstakes Common, another well-maintained wooded common, hosts rare wetland plants and bat colonies, including the rare Bechstein’s bat.
The parish is also characterised by extensive ancient woodlands such as Comps Wood, Wickham Wood, and Wapsbourne Wood, featuring bluebells, wild garlic, and veteran trees. The landscape includes streams like the Bevern Stream and Lambourn Gill, which support diverse aquatic life despite past pollution incidents.
Chailey’s farmland includes historic estates like the Hooke and Hurst Barns, with fields managed to preserve archaic vegetation and wildlife habitats. The area’s history is further marked by the Second World War Chailey Advanced Landing Ground, once used by Polish Spitfire squadrons during the Normandy landings.
