About Chiddingly, East Sussex

Chiddingly is a rural village and civil parish nestled in the Low Weald of East Sussex, about five miles northwest of Hailsham. The parish spans seven square miles and includes several hamlets such as Muddles Green, Thunder’s Hill, Gun Hill, and Whitesmith. The landscape is characterised by seven hills, including Thunders Hill and Holmes Hill, with tributaries of the River Cuckmere flowing nearby.

The village has a rich history dating back to Saxon times, with Roman iron mining evidence and a mention in the Domesday Book. A notable artefact, the Chiddingly Boar—a gilt-silver badge linked to Richard III—was discovered here and is now housed in the British Museum. The parish also has manorial buildings like Chiddingly Place, rebuilt in the 16th century, and Stone Hill, a medieval hall house once owned by author J.M. Barrie and later by musician Keith Emerson.

Chiddingly hosts an annual festival showcasing a variety of artistic performances and is home to the Gun Brewery, which offers its own brews and events. The village supports a thriving bonfire society that celebrates local traditions with unique pyrotechnic displays. Nature enthusiasts can visit Burgh Hill Farm Meadow, a Site of Special Scientific Interest known for its rare grassland.

The parish church dates back to at least the 13th century, and the community includes a primary school, a village hall, and a museum and archive. Nearby, the Farley Farm House gallery offers guided tours focused on the lives of artists Roland Penrose and Lee Miller.
