About Cowbeech, East Sussex

Cowbeech is a small village nestled in East Sussex, within the civil parish of Herstmonceux. Its nearest town, Hailsham, lies just under four miles to the south-west. The village is notable for The Merrie Harriers, a pub with origins dating back to the 16th century, which was previously known as The Old House and The Cow before adopting its current name in 1826.

Historically, Cowbeech was involved in Wealden iron production. Cowbeech Forge, also known as Crawle or Cralle Forge, operated near Hammer Lane by the Cuckmere River from 1559 until 1693, even casting shot for the Office of Ordnance in 1653. The village’s name has evolved over centuries, originally recorded as Coppetebeche in 1261, a reference to a pollarded beech tree, before gradually transforming into its present form.

The village retains links to its past through local place names such as Cinderford Lane and Studdens Lane, derived from families mentioned in a 1417 land conveyance document. Cowbeech has also been home to notable figures including Lord Shawcross, the chief British prosecutor at the Nuremberg trials, and Elsie Bowerman, a pioneering barrister, suffragette, and Titanic survivor.

Cowbeech hosts the Cowbeech Bonfire Society, a charitable trust that organises annual events like the village show, pantomime, and bonfire, contributing to the community’s cultural life.
