About Cripps Corner, East Sussex

Cripps Corner is a village in East Sussex, situated within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It lies on a southern ridge overlooking the River Rother valley, with Bodiam located 2.5 miles to the north. The village forms part of the civil parish of Ewhurst and is one of three settlements in the parish alongside Staplecross and Ewhurst Green.

The village is centred around a triangular junction where three roads meet: the B2165 to Beckley, the B2089 connecting the A21 to Rye, and the B2244 running between Hawkhurst and Sedlescombe. A notable feature is the 1834 viaduct carrying the B2089 over the B2244, built following designs by Thomas Telford. Local amenities include a garden centre, plant nursery, glamping site, pet supplies company, and a furniture maker.

Cripps Corner is steeped in history, with 75 Second World War concrete anti-tank blocks nearby, part of a defensive perimeter considered one of the finest surviving examples in the country. The village also boasts several Grade II listed buildings, such as Forge House, The White Hart pub, Bre Cottage, and Chittlebirch, reflecting its architectural heritage.

Nearby natural attractions include Brede High Woods, an ancient woodland owned by the Woodland Trust, offering scenic walks and autumnal beauty. The village hosts the annual ‘Big Green Cardigan’ music event, attracting around 500 visitors. Public transport links connect Cripps Corner to Hastings, Bodiam, Bexhill-on-Sea, and other local towns, with the closest railway stations at Bodiam and Robertsbridge.
