About Crowborough, East Sussex

Crowborough is a town and civil parish in East Sussex, situated on the edge of Ashdown Forest within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It stands as the highest town in the High Weald, with its summit reaching 242 metres above sea level, making it the second highest point in East Sussex. The town lies 33 miles south of London and seven miles south-west of Royal Tunbridge Wells.

The town’s name originates from Old English, meaning “hill or mound frequented by crows.” Crowborough grew significantly after the arrival of the railway in 1868 and was once promoted as a health resort due to its elevated position and surrounding natural beauty. It includes several villages and hamlets such as Jarvis Brook and Stone Cross.

Crowborough is closely linked to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who lived here for 23 years. The author of the Sherlock Holmes stories was captain of the local golf club, and his legacy is celebrated with a statue in the town centre and street names like Watson Way and Sherlock Shaw.

The town offers a variety of recreational facilities including Goldsmiths Recreation Ground, which features a sports centre, swimming pool, boating lake, and miniature railway. Crowborough Common, an ancient heathland and woodland area, provides public access for walking and exercise. Crowborough Country Park, a former clay quarry turned nature reserve, is also popular for informal recreation.

Sport plays a significant role in the community with football, rugby, cricket, tennis, squash, and hockey clubs active in the town. Crowborough also hosts annual events such as a Guy Fawkes Night celebration and a carnival, reflecting its vibrant local traditions.
