East Chiltington, East Sussex

East Chiltington is a village and civil parish nestled within the Lewes District of East Sussex, stretching across 3.76 square miles from the crest of the South Downs northward. The parish is notable for its rich natural landscapes, including the Bevern Stream, which flows eastwards to the River Ouse and supports sea trout spawning, mayflies, caddis flies, and great crested newts. Despite a past pollution incident, the stream has shown signs of recovery.

The area boasts extensive woodland, with remnants of the ancient Home Wood now reduced to Great Home and Middle Home Woods, featuring species such as oak, hornbeam, and hazel, alongside spring bluebells and wild daffodils. Warningore Wood, a hornbeam coppice with ancient trees and orchids, and Long Wood, home to bluebells and silver-washed fritillary butterflies, add to the parish’s ecological diversity. The disused Novington sandpits, now lakes, provide habitat for waterfowl and wetland plants but require management to control invasive species.

East Chiltington lies along the Clayton to Offham Escarpment, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, with National Trust reserves at Blackcap and Ashcombe Bottom offering chalk grassland, woodland, and scrub habitats. Blackcap features ancient grassland fragments with orchids and waxcap fungi, while Ashcombe Bottom is a biodiverse woodland valley rich in butterflies and migrant birds.

The village church, dating from the 12th century, is constructed from winklestone, a fossil-rich stone, and is surrounded by wildflower meadows hosting a variety of native plants and orchids. Nearby, Hurst Barns estate includes an 18th-century farmhouse and historic outbuildings, set among lime trees and owned by the Earl of Albemarle. The Sussex Greensand Way, a Roman road, crosses the parish, hinting at the area’s long history.
