East Dean is a small village and civil parish nestled in a valley within the South Downs, about 5½ miles north-northeast of Chichester in West Sussex. The village pond is notable as the source of the River Lavant. The parish covers over 4,100 acres, with a population of just over 200 people recorded in the 2011 census.
The village features a Church of England parish church, All Saints, which dates back to the 12th century and is Grade I listed. Its cruciform design includes a central tower with three historic bells, the oldest from the 15th century. Alongside the parish church, there is also an FIEC free church. Many buildings, including the pub The Star and Garter, are constructed from flint with brick detailing, reflecting traditional local architecture.
East Dean has a rich history, with evidence of Stone Age flint tools, Bronze Age barrows, and Roman artefacts found nearby. The area was mentioned in records dating back to AD 689 and was once owned by King Alfred the Great. A deserted medieval settlement lies within the parish, and Newhouse Farmhouse, an 18th-century Grade II* listed building, stands just north of the village.
The Monarch’s Way long-distance footpath crosses the parish, and part of the grounds of Goodwood House extends into East Dean. The village supports a football team founded in 1880, competing in the West Sussex Football League. In 2020, East Dean adopted a community flag representing its history, registered with the UK Flag Institute.
