Hampden Park Railway Station, located in Eastbourne, serves as a key node on the East Coastway Line with services provided by Southern. This station, which opened on 1 January 1888 originally under the name Willingdon, was later renamed to Hampden Park. It features two platforms and facilitates a variety of routes, including frequent services to London Victoria, Brighton, Ore, and Ashford International.
The station is strategically used by some passengers as an interchange point to access different services, particularly to avoid travelling into central Eastbourne. Notably, Hampden Park is involved in a unique operational pattern where many trains pass through the station twice during their journey—once heading into Eastbourne and once on the way out, although not all trains stop each time.
Additionally, the station is adjacent to one of the busiest level crossings in the country, which can significantly impact local traffic flow. The control of this crossing was transferred to the Three Bridges Regional Operations Centre in February 2015, marking a significant update in its management. Hampden Park continues to serve as a vital transport link within the Eastbourne area, accommodating a steady flow of passengers daily.
