About Etchingham, East Sussex

Etchingham is a village and civil parish nestled in the Rother district of East Sussex, situated roughly 15 miles southeast of Royal Tunbridge Wells and 13 miles northwest of Hastings. The village lies near the junction of the A265 and A21 roads and is served by Etchingham railway station on the Hastings Line, providing direct links to London Charing Cross and Cannon Street.

The village’s history stretches back before the Norman Conquest, originally centred around a moated manor house once owned by the de Achyngham family. Though the manor no longer stands, its legacy remains in local legends, such as the tale of a great bell submerged in the old moat. The 14th-century parish church, dedicated to The Assumption of Blessed Mary and St Nicholas, features one of England’s oldest brass weather vanes and a notable series of misericords, including one depicting a fox preaching to geese.

Etchingham has been home to several notable figures, including James Temple, a judge involved in the trial of Charles I, and the novelist Anthony Burgess, who lived in the village during the 1960s. The village also has connections to folk musicians Ashley Hutchings and Shirley Collins, who formed the Etchingham Steam Band in the 1970s.

Community life centres around two village halls at Parsonage Croft, supporting groups such as the Pickleball Club and the Royal British Legion branch. The village once had a shop and post office, with the community rallying to reopen a store in 2003 after a period without one. Cricket has a long tradition here, with the Etchingham & Fontridge Cricket Club revived in 2006, maintaining links to its pre-war origins.
