Falmer is a small village and civil parish in East Sussex, nestled between Brighton and Lewes. The village is split by the A27 road, with a quaint cluster of houses and a pub to the north, and the southern part featuring a large pond surrounded by cottages and the parish church dedicated to St Laurence. The pond, home to ducks and geese, is central to the village’s identity and likely inspired its name, derived from the Saxon term for “fallow mere” or dark pool.
The village boasts a rich history, recorded in the Domesday Book with 43 households and a church. A notable 13th-century thatched barn behind the church was once used by monks from Lewes Priory to store corn. Falmer has seen significant change, especially with the establishment of the University of Sussex and the University of Brighton campuses nearby.
Surrounding the village, the parish features impressive downland landscapes with ancient earthworks, medieval field systems, and remnants of chalk grassland, though much has been lost to modern farming. Areas like Loose Bottom, New Barn Valley, and Balmer Down reveal archaeological sites and rare flora and fauna, including butterflies and wild orchids.
Falmer is also close to the Falmer Stadium, home to Brighton & Hove Albion F.C., located just outside the parish boundary. The village is served by Falmer railway station on the East Coastway line, providing easy access to the surrounding region.
