Flimwell is a village in East Sussex, located within the civil parish of Ticehurst and the Rother district. It lies near the Kent border at the junction of the A21, A268, and B2087 roads. Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Flimwell is close to Bewl Water and Bedgebury Pinetum, with neighbouring villages including Ticehurst, Hurst Green, and Hawkhurst.
The village has a linear layout and covers about 3.5 square kilometres, with only around 5% of this area built-up. Surrounding settlements include Union Street and Dale Hill to the west, and Seacox Heath to the east. Flimwell’s name originates from Old English, meaning “the spring of the fugitives,” and was recorded as Flimenwelle in 1210.
Local amenities include an award-winning smokery and wine store, a pub, motel, pine furniture shop, church dedicated to St Augustine of Canterbury, cricket ground with pavilion, playground, park with café, and various businesses. A new village hall was completed in 2020, enhancing community facilities.
On the village’s eastern edge lies Seacox Heath, a Grade II listed building styled as a French chateau and built in 1871. Owned by the Russian Embassy, it has attracted attention due to incidents involving estate dogs and current discussions about its potential transfer to the Ukrainian Government. Historically, Flimwell was a stage on the post road from London to Rye in the 16th century.
