About Hailsham, East Sussex

Hailsham, located in East Sussex, is a historic market town with roots dating back to the Neolithic age and mentions in the Domesday Book. Its name likely derives from the Saxon “Haegels Ham,” meaning the clearing of Haegel or Aella. The town gained its Market Charter in 1252, establishing a tradition that continues with weekly markets and a monthly farmers’ market.

The town’s heritage is reflected in its architecture, including the Grade II listed Hailsham Pavilion, a cinema and concert hall dating from 1921, and St Mary’s Church, with origins in the 15th century. The Old Vicarage, Fleur de Lys building, and remnants of historic mills also highlight Hailsham’s rich past. Nearby Michelham Priory, founded in 1229, offers medieval charm with its moat and Tudor house.

Hailsham is surrounded by attractive countryside, including the 22-acre Hailsham Country Park, known for its woodlands, wildflower meadows, and ponds. The Common Pond, a central town feature, and the Dennis King Memorial Sensory Garden add to the green spaces available for residents and visitors.

The town supports a vibrant community life with sports clubs, including Hailsham Town Football Club and Hailsham Cricket Club, and cultural events such as the annual Hailsham Festival and Guy Fawkes Night celebrations. The Cuckoo Trail, a former railway line, offers scenic routes for walking and cycling.

Hailsham’s shopping scene centres on the High Street and George Street, with a mix of local and national retailers, alongside supermarkets like ASDA, Waitrose, and Tesco. The town is well connected by road, with the A22 nearby, and bus services linking to Eastbourne, Lewes, and Brighton. The nearest railway station is at Polegate.
