Herstmonceux is a village and civil parish in East Sussex, England, known for its historic Herstmonceux Castle. The castle, once home to the Royal Greenwich Observatory, now hosts the Bader International Study Centre of Queen’s University, Canada, attracting international students annually. The castle grounds also feature the Observatory Science Centre and the annual Herstmonceux Medieval Festival held every August.
The village’s name originates from the Anglo-Saxon word for “wooded hill” combined with the Monceux family name, lords of the manor in the 12th century. Herstmonceux has a rich history, including one of the earliest recorded cricket matches in 1677 at nearby “ye Dicker.” The area is also noted for the traditional craft of making trugs—baskets crafted from split willow set in ash or chestnut frames.
Herstmonceux parish includes several hamlets such as Cowbeech and Windmill Hill, where the Windmill Hill Windmill is located. The parish contains two Sites of Special Scientific Interest: Herstmonceux Park, known for its unique wetland habitat and Milk Parsley, and part of the Pevensey Levels, a biologically rich area of grazing meadows.
The village features All Saints’ Church, with a 12th-century tower and medieval nave, overlooking the castle, and a listed Congregational Church dating from 1811. Herstmonceux is twinned with Varengeville-sur-Mer in Normandy, France, fostering cultural links between the communities.
