About Litlington, East Sussex

Litlington is a small village nestled within the South Downs National Park in East Sussex, located just three miles east-northeast of Seaford. The village lies on the left bank of a narrow valley, surrounded by dramatic chalkland that stretches down to the pebble shoreline of Cuckmere Haven. This natural coastline is framed by the iconic Seven Sisters cliffs, offering striking views and access to popular walking trails.

The village retains a historic charm, with its medieval flint church dedicated to St Michael the Archangel, featuring a distinctive white-painted wooden belfry and spire. Community life centres around a hall built in 1953, while nearby Exceat hosts a canoe club and paddleboarding activities on the river.

Litlington’s economy is closely tied to its rural setting. The Long Man Brewery sources barley from 500 acres of surrounding farmland, producing local ales served at The Plough & Harrow, a gastropub that also offers a crystal and gemstone store. The village is also known for the Litlington White Horse, a large chalk figure cut into the downs during the 19th century, which replaced an earlier version and is one of only nine such figures outside Wiltshire.

Notable past residents include Maria Fitzherbert, mistress of George IV, who lived at Clapham House. The landscape around Litlington features sheep fields and remnants of World War II pillboxes, adding layers of history to this tranquil downland village.
