About Normans Bay, East Sussex

Normans Bay is a small coastal fishing hamlet located in Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex. Originally known as Pevensey Sluice, the area was renamed after the Normans Bay railway halt opened in 1905. The hamlet lies close to popular seaside resorts such as Eastbourne and Brighton, with regular train services connecting the area.

Visitors can enjoy a sand and shingle beach, alongside historical features like Martello Tower 55. The Star Inn public house offers a local spot to relax, while two caravan sites provide accommodation options. To the north, the protected marshland of Pevensey Levels offers a glimpse of natural beauty, near the site of the abandoned medieval village of Northeye.

Offshore, divers discovered a significant shipwreck in 2005, initially thought to be the English warship HMS Resolution from 1703. Further research suggests it may be the Dutch warship Wapen van Utrecht, sunk during the Battle of Beachy Head in 1690. This adds a fascinating maritime history to the area’s appeal.

While the nearest bus service is in Pevensey Bay, Normans Bay’s railway station ensures easy access for visitors seeking a quieter coastal experience with historical and natural interest.
