Penhurst is a small village and civil parish nestled on the Weald in East Sussex, approximately four miles west of Battle. The parish lies within the High Weald National Landscape, characterised by its undulating terrain and extensive woodland, including Creep Wood, Peens Wood, and Foxearth Wood. An Ordnance Survey benchmark marks the village at 63.386 metres above sea level.
The village’s name, meaning ‘Pena’s wooded hill’, dates back to its mention in the Domesday Book of 1086, when it was part of the hundred of Hailesaltede and under the tenancy of Battle Abbey. Penhurst shares a parish council with neighbouring Ashburnham, reflecting their historical connection since 1810.
Penhurst boasts fourteen listed buildings, among them an 18th-century barn and a granary from 1776. Penhurst Manor, also known as Church Farmhouse, is a notable Grade II* listed building now serving as a Christian retreat centre supporting overseas missionaries. The parish church of St Michael the Archangel, dating from the 14th century, is Grade I listed and features a churchyard where actor Harry H Corbett, famed for Steptoe and Son, is buried.
