In 2023 a group of crew at Pett Level Independent Rescue Boat (plirb.org) got together to have a weekly shanty sing-song – just a casual social activity. A vocal coach friend offered to give them some guidance and gradually some real talent started to emerge!
The singers decided that they might be able to raise a few quid for PLIRB by singing at events, but had no real ambition.
But the shanty group grew and they decided to have a debut event at the lifeboat house in Pett. Unbelievably over 300 turned up and donated over £3000 – totally astonishing!
Their name – The Pett Slip Buoys – was chosen as PLIRB operates from Pett Slip, and the area has a connection to the world-famous Pet Shop Boys!
That started a journey to sing at public and private events, venues and anywhere that could raise funds.
The Buoys sing to raise money for our future boat fund – our primary rescue boat will need to be replaced in 2027/2028.
They are not a professional band – but they are good! They are also great fun and very entertaining.
