St Mary & St Peter is a historic parish church located in the village of Pett on the East Sussex coast. The site has hosted a place of worship since 1291, with the current structure dating back to 1864, designed by architect B Ferrey. This church replaced an earlier building of similar size, featuring architectural elements such as buttresses and box pews.
The present church is constructed from dark brown stone with lighter bands and features plate tracery windows, except for lancets in the chancel. Notable architectural details include a triplet at the east end, polished granite shafts on the chancel arch, and big foliage corbels. The north-west tower, topped with an octagonal upper stage and a shingled spire, adds a distinctive touch to the building’s profile.
Inside, the church houses historical drawings and photographs that trace its architectural evolution, including changes from a broach spire to a pyramid spire documented between the 18th and 19th centuries. The church underwent significant repairs in the 1950s, particularly to its roof.
Open daily, St Mary & St Peter welcomes visitors and worshippers to explore its rich history and architectural beauty.
