About Pevensey Bay, East Sussex

Pevensey Bay, located in East Sussex, is a small seaside resort nestled behind a shingle beach that plays a crucial role in protecting the low-lying land from flooding and storm damage. The bay is characterised by its clay geology, which makes it vulnerable to erosion over time. Two historic Martello towers, built in 1806 as coastal defences against Napoleonic invasion, stand as reminders of the area’s strategic importance.

The nearby village of Pevensey is steeped in history, famously known as the landing site of William the Conqueror in 1066. The remains of Pevensey Castle, built on the foundations of a Roman fort called Anderitum, still dominate the landscape. This fort was part of the Saxon Shore Forts constructed in the 4th century to defend against barbarian invasions. The castle saw numerous sieges and was adapted for defence as late as World War II.

Pevensey Levels, the marshes behind the bay, cover around 47 square miles and are designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. This fragile nature reserve is home to rare plants and invertebrates, including the fen raft spider, and is jointly managed by Natural England and the Sussex Wildlife Trust.

The area is rich in cultural connections, featuring in works by Rudyard Kipling and Salman Rushdie, and was a hub for smuggling in the 18th and 19th centuries. Pevensey Bay Sailing Club has a notable history in dinghy racing, contributing to the development of several boat classes.

Transport links include the A259 road and two railway stations, Pevensey and Westham, and Pevensey Bay, making the area accessible while retaining its historic charm.
