About Plumpton, East Sussex

Plumpton is a village and civil parish in East Sussex, situated five miles north-west of Lewes. The parish stretches along the north–south axis, with its southern half lying within the South Downs National Park. The South Downs Way crosses Plumpton Plain at the parish’s highest point, offering scenic views of the chalk downland.

The village is known for Plumpton Racecourse, which attracts large crowds on race days, and Plumpton College, a leading land-based education centre farming over 2,500 acres. Plumpton Green, the larger village to the north, hosts most community services including a primary school, shops, pubs, and the railway station on the East Coastway Line.

Historic buildings include the Norman-era Plumpton Church, notable for its rare frescoes and possibly the oldest wooden bell frame in England. Plumpton Place, an Elizabethan manor once owned by Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page, lies adjacent to the college. Ashurst Farm nearby has operated as an organic farm since 1994.

The parish features ancient woodlands such as Plumpton Wood, rich in bluebells and orchids, and the Clayton to Offham Escarpment, a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its chalk grassland habitat. Archaeological sites on Plumpton Plain reveal Bronze Age settlements with visible earthworks and tumuli, while a large chalk cross commemorates the 1264 Battle of Lewes.

The Mill Stream and Bevern Stream flow through the parish, supporting diverse wildlife despite recent pollution challenges. Plumpton’s history includes medieval common land and a shift in population centre following the railway’s arrival in the 19th century. The village maintains a vibrant community with active sports clubs and a drama group.
