Polegate is a town and civil parish in East Sussex, situated about four miles north of Eastbourne. It lies on a ridge between the Weald and the South Downs, with the Pevensey Levels to the east. The town has grown around a key road junction where the A22 meets the A27, providing easy access to Brighton, Hastings, and other nearby cities.
Historically, Polegate expanded significantly with the arrival of the railway in the 1840s, becoming an important junction for lines to Lewes, Hastings, Eastbourne, and Hailsham. Although some lines have since closed, the current station offers regular services to London, Brighton, Eastbourne, and Hastings. The town’s heritage includes the 1817 Polegate Windmill, now a working museum, and remnants of 12th-century monastic buildings like Otteham Court and its chapel.
Local amenities include a variety of shops along the High Street, a Premier Inn hotel, and industrial businesses centred at Chaucer Industrial Business Park. Recreation facilities feature two main grounds: Brightling Road Recreation Ground with a BMX track and skate park, and the War Memorial Recreation Ground, home to Polegate Town FC and a cricket club.
Polegate supports a diverse community with four churches, including St John’s Church, established in the 19th century. The town is governed by a town council and falls within the Wealden District and Lewes parliamentary constituency. It also maintains twinning links with towns in France and Germany.
