About Portslade, East Sussex

Portslade is a suburb of Brighton and Hove in East Sussex, divided into two distinct areas by the old A27 road. Portslade Village, the original settlement dating back to the 16th century, lies inland within a South Downs valley. It retains a rural character with flint buildings, a village green, and the parish church of St Nicolas, one of the city’s oldest churches, dating from around 1150. Nearby stands Portslade Manor, a Norman ruin from the 12th century and a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

To the south, Portslade-by-Sea developed rapidly after the railway arrived in 1840. This coastal area features a small seaport harbour basin linked to Shoreham harbour and an industrial centre. The seafront is separated from the town by the east arm of Shoreham Canal Port. The area includes 19th-century terraced housing, parks, allotments, and a main shopping street on Station Road. Portslade railway station offers direct trains to London Victoria in just over an hour.

The surrounding downland north of Portslade includes special natural areas such as Cockroost Hill and Mount Zion, known for rare wildlife including orchids and butterflies. These slopes also hold significant archaeological remains, including a 4,000-year-old Bronze Age settlement and evidence of Iron Age and Romano-British farming. The Sussex Border Path and the Monarch’s Way long-distance footpath pass through this landscape.

Historically, Portslade may have been the Roman port Novus Portus, with Roman roads and burial sites nearby. The coastal name Copperas Gap hints at past copperas production from local iron pyrite nodules. Notable 19th-century residents include barrister Edward Kenealy and Reverend Richard Enraght, known for his advocacy of ritualism in the Church of England.
