About Preston, East Sussex

Preston, once a distinct village north of Brighton’s centre, is now a suburb within the city of Brighton and Hove in East Sussex. Its name, meaning ‘Priests’ farm or settlement’, dates back to its mention in the Domesday Book as Prestetone. The area was absorbed into Brighton in 1928 following development on farmland owned by the Stanford family.

Preston Manor, built in 1738 and gifted to the council in 1933, stands as a historic landmark and museum. Adjacent to the manor is Preston Park, one of the largest green spaces in Brighton and Hove, created from Stanford family land. The park is notable for hosting major public events, including Brighton Pride.

The suburb retains elements of its village origins, such as Middle Road, one of the original lanes, now situated between the Brighton Main Line and the A23 London Road. St John the Evangelist’s Church serves as the current Anglican parish church, while St Peter’s Church is a former parish church in the area.

Preston’s historical crossroads include the junction of the A23 London Road, Preston Drove, and North Road, offering views towards Preston Manor. The suburb’s heritage is reflected in its preserved buildings and the layout that hints at its rural past before becoming part of the expanding city.
