About Rottingdean, East Sussex

Rottingdean is a historic village on the south coast of England, nestled in a dry valley that stretches down to the English Channel. Its origins trace back to Saxon times, with the name believed to derive from a Saxon leader named Rōta. The village has witnessed significant events, including a devastating French raid in 1377, which left a lasting mark on its history.

Architectural heritage is rich in Rottingdean. The Black Horse pub, dating from the reign of Henry VIII, stands as one of the oldest buildings. Challoners, the old manor house, features hidden smugglers’ tunnels and dates back to the late 16th century. The Elms, once home to Rudyard Kipling, overlooks the village pond and is surrounded by Kipling Gardens, preserved to protect the local landscape. The Grange, restored by Lutyens with gardens influenced by Gertrude Jekyll, now houses an art gallery, museum, and library.

St Margaret’s Church, built on an Anglo-Saxon site and redesigned by Sir George Gilbert Scott in the 19th century, contains stained glass windows designed by William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones. The village’s iconic black wooden windmill, erected in 1802 on Beacon Hill, is a Grade II listed landmark maintained by local preservationists.

Rottingdean’s cultural legacy includes connections to notable figures such as the Pre-Raphaelite artist Edward Burne-Jones and writer Enid Bagnold. The village also inspired the board game Cluedo, originating from murder mystery games hosted at the Tudor Close Hotel in the 1920s. The village’s long-standing traditions and historic buildings offer a glimpse into its rich past along the Sussex coast.
