The Clarence, originally opened in 1869, has a storied history as a public house in Silverhill. Initially a wine and spirit retailer, it transformed into a pub by 1871, known over the years by various names including The Clarence Hotel and The Clarence and Tap. The establishment has seen its share of historical events, notably being at the centre of riots in 1913. Despite a brief period of license revocation in 1889 due to disorderly conduct, The Clarence has since cultivated a better reputation, particularly noted in the 1980s for hosting a highly successful quiz team. The pub was privately purchased from Shepherd Neame in 2008 and continues to operate as a beloved local hostelry, free from brewery ties. The Clarence has been a fixture in the community, witnessing significant local developments and changes through the decades.
