Just seen this message! Any relation to Thomas Noakes and Mary Tomsett, both of Udimore, married at St. George’s Church Brede 3rd Jan 1825?

  3. avatar

Yes indeed! Thomas was the brother of my great great grandfather John Noakes who lived all his life (1800-1954) in Udimore. Thomas and his brother James left Udimore for Australia in 1839 and 1837 respectively. i researched and wrote about the family (and their smuggling connections) in the book “In Udimore He Remained” in 2009. Still a few available.

In Udimore He Remained is the book i wrote about the Noakes family of Udimore, in particular John (1800-1854) my great great grandfather. His brothers Thomas and James emigrated to Australia in the late 1830s to start new lives; another brother William was put on trial at the Old Bailey for leading a smuggling gang. The book contains a lot of social history about Udimore in the 1800s. Still a few copies available from me at [reveal email]

Hallo Colin, Your message has only just been brought to my attention. I did a lot of research about Udimore for my book about the Noakes family who lived in Udimore until 1854. one branch then moved to Hastings; others migrated to Australia. There is a lot of social history of Udimore in the 1780s-1850s period in the book-quite a few smuggling accounts too. Contact me at [reveal email]
The book is £15 plus postage.
