About Wadhurst, East Sussex

Wadhurst is a market town in East Sussex, England, perched on a high ridge of the Weald, a range of wooded hills between the North and South Downs. The civil parish includes the hamlets of Cousley Wood and Tidebrook. Nearby are the reservoir of Bewl Water and the sources of the River Bewl and Limden.

The town’s history dates back to Anglo-Saxon times, with its name likely derived from a Saxon tribe called Wada. Granted a market charter in 1253, Wadhurst thrived in the iron industry during the 16th to 18th centuries. Several Georgian ironmasters’ houses remain, including Hill House and The Old Vicarage, alongside iron gravestones in the medieval church of St Peter and St Paul.

Wadhurst retains a charming range of traditional shops and pubs along Church Street, which features some of the oldest cottages dating from the 13th and 14th centuries. The town expanded in the Victorian era towards its railway station, the highest in southern England, linking London and Hastings.

The community is twinned with Aubers in France, commemorating the heavy losses suffered by local men during the Battle of Aubers Ridge in World War I. Notable residents have included guitarist Jeff Beck and television presenter Davina McCall.

Education is served by a Church of England primary school, a secondary academy, and an independent Catholic preparatory school. Transport connections include regular buses to nearby towns and a railway station providing access to London and the south coast.
