These are my great great grandparents. I had hit a dead end for over a decade with them. My father was Alan Stoner, his mother was Margaret Husher, her grandparents were Philadelphia Swift and William Gutsell. [reveal email] in the US as first generation Jacquie

What do you need to know?
William Gutsell aged 40 or 60 in 1841 census for Westfield and Philadelphia aged 55. Offspring Delia born abt 1827; Jane b abt 1826; Louis b abt 1821 ans John born abt 1816.
    In 1851 Westfield
William Gutsell aged 74 and Philadelphia aged 65 Also in the same household:
John, son aged 33; Edwin Gutsell son aged 18, Henry Piddleston aged 9 and Eliza Piddleston visitor widow aged 40; James Adams aged 25 and Delia Adams aged 24 (this could be Delia Gutsell married) and son William Adams aged 2.

    Hope this helps. Meg

Thank you ever so much for your response. Are you related to them? Where / how have you done your research? I really appreciate your help. Jacquie in USA.

    Thanks Meg,

Am trying to link Philadelphia and her parents, Robert 1743-1824 and Mary Hards to the other Swifts of the area.

Looks like you are right about Delia being the daughter of William and Philadelphia and the dates would also suggest that Eliza Piddleston was also a daughter.

Haven’t come across Edwin before but interestingly, Eliza had a son Edwin born 1829 before she married.

Any further info you have on the Swifts or the Gutsells would be much appreciated.

    Hello Alan

I don’t have a connection to the Swift family but have found a baptism for Philadelphia Swift –
Philly Swift daughter of Robert and Mary was baptised at Sedlescombe on 9 November 1783.

    Kind regards
    Caroline

    Hi Alan
Sorry, I haven’t any other information about the Swifts or the Gutsells except that some of the GAIN family that I am researching married Gutsells. If I can help by checking census returns for 1841 onwards let me know.
    Regards Meg

    Hi Jacquie,
I’m not related to the Gutsells although two of the Gain family that my husband is descended from, married Gutsells. I subscribe to Ancestry which means I can check census records for the UK from 1841-1901 with 1911 coming on stream shortly.
