About Alkham, Kent

Alkham is a village and civil parish located about five miles west of Dover in Kent. The parish includes the settlements of Chalksole and Ewell Minnis. Its Anglican church, dedicated to St Anthony, is a Grade I listed building with a history dating back to at least 1093 when it was mentioned as subordinate to Folkestone.

The village was once known as the Manor of Halcham in the 13th century. St Anthony’s Church was granted to St. Radegund’s Abbey in 1258 and later passed to Thomas Cranmer following the dissolution of the monasteries. The church underwent Victorian restoration in 1872 and features a ring of four bells cast in 1683 by John Hodson.

Inside the church is the stone lid of the coffin of Herbert de Averenches, a monk from St. Radegund’s Abbey, bearing a 12th-century inscription believed to be one of the oldest in Kent. The former Wesleyan chapel on Slip Lane has since been converted into a private residence.
