About Aylesford, Kent

Aylesford is a historic village and civil parish in Kent, situated on the banks of the River Medway, just four miles northwest of Maidstone. The old village retains much of its charm with around 60 houses, many once shops, alongside two pubs and a village shop on the high street. The parish extends over seven square miles, encompassing settlements like Eccles and Blue Bell Hill, with a total population exceeding 10,000.

The area boasts a rich history dating back to Neolithic times, with notable ancient sites such as Kit’s Coty House and Little Kits Coty House nearby. Archaeological finds include Bronze Age swords and Iron Age settlements, with artefacts from local excavations displayed in the British Museum. The village is linked to significant historical events, including battles recorded in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and connections to the Norman Conquest.

Aylesford Priory, known as The Friars, was founded in 1240 by the Carmelite order and remains a centre for pilgrimage and retreats. The priory houses relics of Saint Simon Stock and features artwork by ceramic artist Adam Kossowski. The medieval bridge over the Medway, dating back to the 14th century, is a key landmark, now complemented by a modern bridge to accommodate increased traffic.

The village has evolved with Victorian-era housing and industrial developments, including the former Aylesford Newsprint factory, once Europe’s largest paper recycling plant. Aylesford railway station, opened in 1856, connects the village to Maidstone and London. Nearby, the Royal British Legion Village supports disabled veterans with housing and employment opportunities.

Sports are active in the community, with local football and rugby clubs, and the village is home to Britain’s oldest operating sauna, originally built for the 1948 London Olympics, currently under restoration efforts.
