About Aylesham, Kent

Aylesham is a village in Kent, established in 1926 to house miners working at the nearby Snowdown Colliery. Its origins as a coal mining community are still evident today, with local traditions such as a male voice choir, brass band, and rugby club maintaining the heritage of the colliery. The village was designed by Sir Patrick Abercrombie with ambitions to grow into a town, though development remained modest.

The location holds deeper historical significance, with archaeological finds including Saxon skeletons, Bronze Age urns, and Roman artefacts discovered in the area. Some older properties in Aylesham are linked to Edward of Woodstock, the Black Prince, adding a medieval layer to its history.

Aylesham’s sporting life centres around the Snowdown Colliery Welfare Rugby Football Club, active since 1930 and rooted in community rugby rather than professional play. The village also lies near the Miners’ Way Trail, a 27-mile circular route connecting former coalfield parishes, and is close to the North Downs Way, accessible via footpaths from the village.

The village’s churches, built in the 1920s and 1950s, reflect its community spirit. St Peter’s Church and Aylesham Baptist Church offer regular services and host various local activities, while St Finbarr’s Catholic Church, opened in 1957, supports both worship and social groups, including the Snowdown Colliery Male Voice Choir.

Aylesham railway station links the village to London and Dover, providing hourly services on the Chatham Main Line. Local bus routes connect to Canterbury and surrounding areas, maintaining Aylesham’s accessibility despite its rural setting.
