About Barham, Kent

Barham is a village and civil parish in Kent, located about six miles south-east of Canterbury and eight miles north of Folkestone. The village’s name dates back to 799, originally recorded as Bioraham, combining the name of a Saxon chief, Beora, with “ham,” meaning settlement or homestead.

The landscape around Barham is predominantly rural and wooded, featuring rolling hills known as Barham Downs to the north-west. The Nailbourne, a seasonal tributary of the Little Stour, flows intermittently through the village centre. Nearby hamlets include Derringstone to the south, Breach one mile further south, and Out Elmstead to the north.

Historic landmarks include Broome Park, a Grade I listed 17th-century building with extensive Grade II listed parkland, and the 14th-century Church of St John the Baptist, notable for its green copper spire and partial interior remodelling. Out Elmstead contains several listed buildings, reflecting the area’s rich architectural heritage.

Barham once had the Black Mill, a windmill that was accidentally destroyed by fire in 1970, and a golf club founded in 1890 that ceased after the First World War. The village green hosts the Duke of Cumberland pub, and the parish church honours Field Marshal Horatio Herbert Kitchener, who spent his final years at Broome Park.
