Bearsted is a village in mid-Kent, situated two miles east of Maidstone town centre. Nestled on the north bank of the River Len at the foot of the North Downs, it retains a traditional village atmosphere despite being part of the Maidstone conurbation. The village centre, focused around Church Lane and The Green, boasts 59 listed properties, many clustered around the village green and flanked by two historic pubs.
The Church of the Holy Cross, a Grade I listed building, stands as a significant landmark. Its stone arch includes Saxon elements, and the tower is adorned with stone beasts, thought to represent the village’s name. The churchyard may mark an early Christian site, possibly linked to a council held by King Wihtred of Kent in 696 AD. The Green itself, once known as the Hothe, features buildings dating from the 15th to 17th centuries, contributing to Bearsted’s historic character.
Bearsted’s conservation areas include numerous listed buildings such as Snowfield and Garden House, associated with author Baroness Orczy, and several timber-framed houses dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries. The village also incorporates part of Tudor Mote Park on its western boundary.
The ancient Pilgrims’ Way and the modern North Downs Way footpaths run along the nearby North Downs, offering scenic walking routes. Bearsted’s rich heritage and well-preserved architecture make it a notable example of a Kentish village with deep historical roots.
