Benenden is a village and civil parish in the borough of Tunbridge Wells, Kent, situated on the Weald about six miles west of Tenterden. The parish includes the settlements of Iden Green, East End, Dingleden, and Standen Street. Its name originates from Old English, meaning Bynna’s wooded pasture, with historical spellings dating back to the Domesday Book.
The village has a rich history linked to the Wealden iron industry, which dates back to before the Roman period. Archaeological finds include Roman roads and a settlement at Hemsted, now the site of Benenden School. The parish church, dedicated to St George, is a 19th-century building replacing a medieval church lost to fire.
Benenden School, a private girls’ boarding school north of the village, boasts notable alumnae such as Princess Anne and actress Rachel Weisz. The village also has historical connections to the cloth-making industry and once had four mills, including the still-standing Beacon Mill.
In 1907, a chest hospital was established in Benenden for tuberculosis treatment, evolving into an independent medical facility serving members of The Benenden Healthcare Society and others. During World War II, the area witnessed the heroic actions of Free French pilot Jean Maridor, who intercepted a German V-1 flying bomb near the village.
The village hall, funded by Lord Rothermere and opened in 1977, features an asymmetric timber frame design. Benenden’s heritage and community facilities reflect its longstanding presence in Kent’s rural landscape.
