About Biddenden, Kent

Biddenden is a large village and civil parish nestled in the borough of Ashford, Kent, situated on the Weald of Kent about five miles north of Tenterden. Historically, it was a hub for the Wealden iron industry and clothmaking, with Flemish clothworkers settling here during Edward III’s reign, fostering a thriving textile trade that funded many of the village’s fine houses.

The parish church, All Saints Biddenden, dates mainly from the 13th century and likely replaced an earlier Saxon church. The village school, founded in 1522, honours John Mayne, a benefactor from the Mayney family who once lived at Biddenden Place.

Biddenden is famously linked to the Biddenden Maids, Mary and Eliza Chulkhurst, conjoined twins from the 12th century. Their legacy endures through a local charity that supports pensioners and widows with seasonal gifts including bread, cheese, tea, and the distinctive Biddenden cakes.

The local economy includes a notable cottage industry of vineyards and orchards producing wines, ciders, and juices. Biddenden’s Cider, a well-known brand, operates close to the village centre. Though the village once had a railway station on the Kent and East Sussex Railway, it closed in 1954.

Notable residents have included King Rama VII of Siam, who lived in Biddenden after his abdication, and several historical figures such as theologians and composers. The village maintains a predominantly white population with a strong Christian heritage, reflecting its rural Kentish character.
