About Brabourne, Kent

Brabourne is a village and civil parish located in the Ashford district of Kent, England, about 4.5 miles east of Ashford town centre. The original village, now known as East Brabourne, developed around the parish church. Nearby Brabourne Lees has grown on former common land closer to the A20 and M20 roads, while the western parish remains rural with scattered farms.

The parish church, dedicated to St Mary the Blessed Virgin, is a stone building featuring Norman and Early English architectural styles. Its tower, restored in 1923-24 by Sir Gilbert Scott, houses eight bells as of 2002. Inside, the church contains numerous monuments to the Scott family, several stained glass windows including some very early glass, and seating for 200. Brabourne Lees also has a Zion Strict Baptist Chapel.

Brabourne has found a place in literature, being repurposed as “Brabbas Horn” in Russell Hoban’s 1980 post-apocalyptic novel Riddley Walker.
