About Challock, Kent

Challock is a largely wooded village in Kent, situated near one of the highest points on the North Downs, with the 700-foot contour close to its centre. The village name originates from the Old English ‘Cealfloca’, meaning calf enclosure, and its history dates back to around AD 823.

The village lies at the crossroads of two significant roads: the A251 connecting Ashford to Faversham, and the A252 linking Maidstone to Canterbury. This junction was once notorious for accidents before the installation of a roundabout, partly due to the nearby Halfway House public house.

Historically, Challock was granted by William the Conqueror to Battle Abbey, remaining under its ownership until the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century. A smock mill once stood north of the village until it was destroyed by a storm in 1906, having been out of use for many years prior.

The parish church is dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian and features notable wall paintings by local artist John Ward and his friend Gordon Davies. The village also has a Methodist chapel and hosts an annual Goose Fair each September.

Challock is the birthplace of showjumper William Funnell, adding a sporting note to its rich local heritage.
