About Chatham, Kent

Chatham in Kent grew around the historic Chatham Dockyard, established by Queen Elizabeth I in 1568. This dockyard was a major shipbuilding and refitting base for the Royal Navy, launching vessels such as HMS Victory. Although the dockyard closed in 1984, its preserved naval buildings now form the Chatham Historic Dockyard museum, featuring attractions like the submarine HMS Ocelot.

The town’s defensive heritage is marked by several 18th and 19th-century forts, including Fort Amherst and Fort Pitt, built to protect the dockyard from invasion. These fortifications, alongside barracks such as Brompton Barracks—still home to the Corps of Royal Engineers—reflect Chatham’s military significance.

Architectural highlights include the Grade II listed Chatham Town Hall, now The Brook Theatre, and the former public library designed by local architect George Edward Bond. Though the original library building was demolished in 1984, its Edwardian style once complemented the civic character of New Road.

Chatham’s location on the River Medway provided strategic advantages, with the river historically used for transporting goods like timber and iron for shipbuilding. The town lies where the North Downs meet the river, with areas such as St Mary’s Island now developed for housing and commercial use.

Transport links remain important, with Chatham railway station serving as a key interchange on the North Kent and Chatham Main Lines. The Chatham Waterfront bus station, opened in 2011, replaced the older Pentagon Bus Station, improving local connectivity.

Cultural heritage is strong, with ties to notable figures such as Charles Dickens, who spent part of his childhood here. The town also fostered creative movements including the Medway Delta Sound and the Stuckism art movement, reflecting its vibrant artistic legacy.
