About Cobham, Kent

Cobham in Kent is a village steeped in history, with roots tracing back to at least the 10th century. The parish includes the hamlet of Sole Street and lies just south of the ancient Roman road, Watling Street. Since 1970, Cobham has been designated a conservation area to protect its historic character.

The village is renowned for Cobham Hall, a grand Grade I listed manor house once home to the Earls of Darnley. Its gardens were designed by the celebrated landscape gardener Humphry Repton. Today, Cobham Hall serves as a private boarding school for girls, retaining much of its original estate, including the striking Darnley Mausoleum, a pyramid-topped structure dating from 1786.

Cobham’s parish church, dedicated to St Mary Magdalene, dates from the 13th century and is notable for its exceptional collection of monumental brasses, some dating back to the early 14th century. Nearby, Cobham College, originally built to house priests in the 14th century, now functions as an almshouse.

The village also features a 15th-century hall house from Sole Street, which was carefully relocated to the Weald and Downland Living Museum to preserve its medieval architecture. Cobham Park and Jeskyns provide extensive woodlands and greenspace, reflecting the area’s rural heritage.

Literary connections include Charles Dickens, who frequented the village and set part of The Pickwick Papers in the local Leather Bottle pub. Cobham’s rich history and well-preserved buildings offer a glimpse into England’s past within a tranquil Kentish setting.
