About Cuxton, Kent

Cuxton is a village in Kent, situated on the left bank of the River Medway within the North Downs. Archaeological finds reveal human occupation dating back around 200,000 years, including a notable hoard of Acheulian handaxes now displayed in the British Museum. The village’s name is thought to derive from “Cucula’s stone,” and beneath the churchyard lie the remains of a Roman villa.

The parish church is distinguished by its unusual southeast–northwest alignment and contains significant Norman architecture. In Tudor times, Whorne’s Place was the principal house, built by Sir William Whorne, Lord Mayor of London in 1487, though only a granary remains today. Nearby Upper Bush features houses dating from the 14th century and a Tudor yeoman’s house, reflecting the area’s long history.

Cuxton’s industrial heritage includes 19th-century brickmaking, with bricks transported via the Medway to London and used in buildings such as the British Museum. A large chalk quarry once supplied raw material for cement production, though it has since been closed and landscaped. The village is also home to Ranscombe Farm, a nature reserve and working farm within the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The village lies on regional walking and cycling routes, including the North Downs Way footpath and National Cycle Network Route 1. Cuxton Marina on the river offers moorings and boat services for leisure craft.
