Dartford, Kent

Dartford, located in Kent just 18 miles southeast of Central London, is a town steeped in history and industry. Its name originates from the River Darent, which flows through the valley where the old London to Dover road once crossed. Established as a market town in medieval times, Dartford has long been a key crossing point and transport hub, with Roman roads and later railways connecting it to London and beyond.

The town’s industrial heritage is rich, with early industries including brewing, paper-making, and iron-working. Notably, Dartford was home to England’s first paper mill in 1588 and the pioneering iron-slitting mill in 1595. The 18th century saw the foundation of J & E Hall, an engineering firm that grew from local workshops. Dartford also played a role in aviation history with RAF Joyce Green, one of the first Royal Flying Corps airfields.

Today, Dartford combines its industrial past with modern developments. The nearby Bluewater shopping centre, built on a former quarry, is a major retail destination. The town centre features cultural venues like The Orchard Theatre and the Mick Jagger Centre, named after the famous Rolling Stones frontman who grew up locally.
