About East Malling, Kent

East Malling, a village in Kent, is steeped in history with its earliest mention dating back to a 10th-century charter of King Edmund I. Recorded in the Domesday Book as Mellingete, the area was traditionally known for farming, particularly hops and fruit orchards, a legacy that continues through the East Malling Research Station.

The village’s historic heart is marked by St James the Great church, a ragstone building with a 14th-century clerestoried nave. It lies within a Conservation Area on the High Street and houses the tomb of Sir Thomas Twisden, a notable 17th-century high court judge linked to the trials of Charles I’s regicides.

East Malling railway station connects the village to Maidstone, Ashford, and London, making it accessible while retaining its rural charm. The surrounding countryside once served as a filming location for the 1960s BBC comedy Mr Pastry, reflecting its picturesque qualities.

Noteworthy residents include actor and theatre director Paxton Whitehead and Sir Thomas Twisden, who owned Bradbourne House from 1656. The village experiences a temperate climate with warm summers and mild winters, typical of the South East of England.
