About Eastchurch, Kent

Eastchurch, located on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent, is renowned as the “home of British aviation.” Its airfield was the site of the first controlled flight by a British pilot on British soil in 1909. The village played a pivotal role in early aviation history, with the Short Brothers building aircraft there and notable pioneers such as Moore-Brabazon, Charles S. Rolls, and the Wright brothers visiting the flying grounds. In 1911, Eastchurch hosted the Gordon Bennett Trophy air race, attracting international competitors.

The village features the gatehouse of Shurland Hall, a historic building linked to families dating back to the 13th century and rumoured to have sheltered Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. This gatehouse is currently under restoration by the Spitalfields Trust. Eastchurch also has a connection to military history through HMS Pembroke II, a Royal Navy Shore Station operational during the First World War.

At the heart of the village stands All Saints’ Church, a large and ornate building dating from 1432. The church contains a stained glass window dedicated to aviation pioneers Rolls and Grace. Recent restoration work has included the refurbishment of the church bells and the addition of the “Jubilee Room” in the tower, funded by local sponsors.

Eastchurch’s aviation heritage is commemorated by a memorial in the village centre and a sculpture of a Short Brothers biplane unveiled in 2009 to mark the centenary of British aviation. The village’s rich history is deeply intertwined with the early development of flight and its architectural landmarks.
