About Edenbridge, Kent

Edenbridge is a historic town and civil parish in the Sevenoaks district of Kent, located on the border with Surrey. Its name originates from Old English, meaning “Eadhelm’s Bridge,” and it sits on the floodplain of the River Medway, near the River Eden. The town’s origins trace back to a Roman road crossing the river, with medieval timber buildings still standing, including the Eden Valley Museum.

The town expanded with the arrival of railways in the 19th century and now includes the community of Marlpit Hill. Edenbridge has experienced significant flooding due to its position on the floodplain, with major events in 1958, 1968, and more recently in 2019. Flood defences have since been improved to protect the town.

Edenbridge once had four mills, all of which survive today but have been repurposed. It is served by two railway stations, Edenbridge and Edenbridge Town, connecting to Redhill, Tonbridge, London Bridge, and Uckfield. The town is twinned with Mont-Saint-Aignan in Normandy, reflected in the name of its inner relief road.

Religious heritage includes the 13th-century Grade I-listed Church of St Peter and St Paul, featuring stained glass by Sir Edward Burne-Jones, alongside Baptist, Roman Catholic, United Reformed, and Jehovah’s Witness places of worship. The former Ebenezer Chapel now serves as a community café.
